character design
personal projects involving character design
This project is still at the beginning of development.
Serafina is usually cool as a cucumber, so I gave her very streamlined silhouettes, as well as a more refined palette.
Louisa is passionate and out-going, so I gave her a fun, vibrant palette, as well as a wardrobe that allows her to look as loud as she speaks.
My skaters are just a fun project I did; there's no real story yet.

I noticed that a lot of actors on children’s shows wear heels, which is unhealthy to wear a lot especially for growing kids. That prompted me to consider how I would design the costumes instead.
Tiff is Louisa’s cousin, and both girls are passionate and loud. However Tiff is much more down-to-earth, indicated by her more muted palette and wardrobe that’s more focused on comfort, as compared to Louisa.
Heidi is bold and steady, as shown through her rectangular shapes and palette.

I was so disappointed that Jay didn’t have any costumes based on modern Middle Eastern fashion, which is so vibrant, I knew it would be so fun to do this project.
Peaches from "Department of Dragon Management"
DDM is a story I’m starting to develop, with Peaches as our narrator. She works in the dragon division of animal control (uniform shown above), in a world where dragons are more or less common nuisances. She’s rude and enjoys physical brawls.
Adalie loves having fun with her friends and she lives in her own world, hence the flowy and whimsical details in her wardrobe, as well as the bright palette.
Gwen is a wall-flower. She is shy and wants to not be noticed, so her palette is extremely muted and her hair falls in her face. Her clothing is also over-sized to act as another layer “camouflage.”

I also noticed that characters basically never wore headscarves even though the villains in the cartoons wore hoods very often, so I used that as an excuse to design the elegant Old Hollywood-style headscarves.
Margo is fun and athletic: all her clothes are easy to move in and vibrant.
Skaters Height Comparison
I found a stock image photoshoot called “Vibrant Young Man Holding A Skateboard,” with these poses and immediately loved it. This image doesn’t work great for a height comparison, but I love these poses.

I wanted to do a quick costume design challenge for myself using this series.
Minette is the leader of this group (as of right now, in early development). She is no-nonsense and keeps everyone safe, reflected in the straight lines of her wardrobe and sensible palette.
Style Exploration 1
I wanted to translate Peaches into other styles and stories, especially considering how she would interact in those stories, e.g. she’s rude, so I used Bonnie and She-Go as inspiration for her “Peaches Possible” look instead of Kim, despite both being main characters, because of Peaches’ personality.

Hero is also in “Department of Dragon Management,” so this digitally colored sketchbook page is just exploring potential concepts
